Nobody wants to sleep in a hammock or eat in a gun deck because if one was on a gun deck on the ship during sleeping hour, you would get wet and it would be dark. The reason you would get wet is because the gun holes would open up and rain would come in. One of the other things you had to do when you were on a galleon is go to war. Quite often, the captain discussed where they were going with the admiral or the top man. Before the ships took off, some things needed to be done. They had to make sure that the life boats did not have holes in them, get all the food, water, and beer ready for the voyage.
Water, sand, and salt are on the boat's surface when war comes their way. The crew pour salt or sand on the ground and this is because helps them not to slip and fall when you are running around during war. You may hurt yourself severely and let your crew down.
